December 17, 2021 – Wilson Creek Watershed
hiwus (Calvin Craigan), a shishalh Nation knowledge keeper and hereditary chief, visited a forest in the tsúkúm (Wilson) Creek Watershed and shared some stories about his peoples relationship to this area and the ecology. This is an area that is out of the existing Mt. Elphinstone Park and that ELF and the SCRD are requesting to be added to an expanded protected area. Unfortunately, the Sunshine Coast Community Forest decided, against much public concern, to plan three cutblocks in this East Wilson tenure area. Possible dates for logging would be 2024 and 2025.
November 15, 2021 – SCCF HM50
The Sunshine Coast Community Forest (SCCF) logging company decided to start road building and tree falling in block HM50 four weeks ago, at the beginning of the rainy season. Was that a good operational decision at this time? They’ve already had to shut-down several times due to rain storm events, including the big one on Nov.15.
Intense rainfall events, like “meteorological rivers” are now commonplace due to climate change and yet SCCF wants to keep on logging “on behalf of the community” so they can hand out a few grants to non-profits who are short on funds. However, what damage is done to the landscape and infrastructure due to persistent timber extraction?
ELF visited the SCCF HM50 on the Nov. 15 shut-down day and documented ditch lines overwhelmed with new surface water gushing off the above slopes due to fresh road building, water redirected over the slope where it met The Locomotive Trail which then turned into a raging torrent, then flooding out a wet zone below, which then created a new channel sending water pouring across the hydro and gas right of way.
I also documented a large volume of surface water from HM50 being redirected into a culvert crossing Highway 101 and entering Kenyon Creek which has an even flow coming out of Trout Lake. A parallel channel captured more water from a road washout leading to the block and from the utility right-of-way. Where the creek crossed Belair Road the bank was collapsing due to peak flow conditions. Kenyon Creek crosses Redroofs Road and then empties into Sargent Bay. Sometime on Nov. 15, the culvert and road at Redroofs was blown out.
There were several factors leading to this blow-out, including in my opinion (based on a working knowledge of hydrology), the accumulation of new surface water volume coming from HM 50 and an adjacent tree farm being directed into Kenyon Creek – all day long. Increased water volume added to an existing channel increases water velocity and force by an X factor.
Logging and road building on south-facing slopes above community infrastructure should be banned across the entire Coast, including the proposed SCCF block HM 70 just a little east of HM50. These intact forests are in fact infrastructure unto themselves, protecting down slope assets, in addition to a suite of environmental services they provide to us for free!
Protect the Dakota Bear Sanctuary
At September 2020 – A new film on the Dakota Bear Sanctuary. After a 6 year campaign, this forest has been deferred once again. ELF and others will continue to work towards its permanent protection. Thank You to all that have stood and continue to voice their support to save this ancient forest.
Despite the deferment we truly cannot rest until this ancient forest is legally protected. Call To Action: Email Minister of Forests Doug Donaldson and tell him straight up that you will not tolerate the destruction of the Dakota Bear Sanctuary, along with its bear dens in the old Yellow-cedars and the 100’s of culturally-modified trees. These politicians don’t seem to care about the demise of our environment that we share with other creatures. Its time to wake them up.

Elphinstone Blockade 09|09|16 from rarities.mp4 on Vimeo.
Roberts Creek, Sunshine Coast, British Columbia. September 9th, 2016.
Police respond to a court injunction against an ongoing logging blockade on Mount Elphinstone. Concerned citizens are hoping to protect this area: it’s one of the older easily accessible forests on the Sunshine Coast. The BC Government considers it a “blue-listed ecosystem,” which, in their own terms, means that it’s an “ecosystem that is of special concern” as well as “formerly vulnerable”. It is also a popular recreation area, for locals and tourists alike, with mountain bikers, hikers, dog walkers, mushroom pickers, artists, and others frequenting the area every-day year-round. The iconic mountain bike trail Twister, which runs next to Mach Chicken, is in the middle of this proposed cut-block, and the cut-block is within the proposed area for a much needed expansion of the Mt. Elphinstone Provincial Park from a mere 240 ha to 2000 ha. Biodiversity and tourism are both on the chopping block, without community consent.
If this concerns you, consider making your voice heard and/or body seen.

New Video – Secrets of the Chanterelle Forest
from Elphinstone Logging Focus(ELF)
Elphinstone Logging Focus takes us on a hike through “The Chanterelle Forest” on the Sunshine Coast, BC. This gem is a prime area for numerous types of wild mushrooms, and we had David Piasta from the group “SHROOM” along with us to share his knowledge on wild foraging. With its proximity to Wilson Creek, the fact it’s never been logged, and the potential to be a commercial mushroom area, this forest needs protection.

Concert for the Protection of the Dakota Bowl Bear Sanctuary With B.E.A.R

Concert for the Protection of the Dakota Bowl Bear Sanctuary with Tim and Thilo from the Band B.E.A.R
Many thanks to Tim and Thilo from the Band B.E.A.R for the October 5th concert in the forest they put on to support the Protection of the Dakota Bowl Bear Sanctuary.
There is a full length professionally edited video of the day in the works.
Below are uncut short videos of the day taken by supporters – more videos will be added soon.Note: This Concert was put on in the Roberts Creek Headwaters Ancient Forest – Thanks to B.E.A.R. and others ELF recently received notice of the protection of this forest. So this is very good news. However, the Dakota Bowl Bear Sanctuary, that lies very close to this forest is now up for sale by BCTS and therefore is extremely threatened. Help us and take action today.
