A Conservation Proposal submitted by Applied Conservation GIS and ELF: Trails and Research
A proposal to help preserve and protect many ecologically important landscapes in a region of the B.C. southern Sunshine Coast (swiya of the shíshálh FN people). The proposal includes approximately 12,000 hectares centred around Sakinaw Lake and three existing protected areas; Spipiyus Class A Provincial Park, Garden Bay Marine Park and the Ambrose Lake Ecological Reserve.
At May 20 – Ecological Assessment of Proposed Sunshine Coast Community Forest Blk EW25 on Public Lands
Executive Summary:
Ground truthing of recent GIS digital mapping data by contractor Applied Conservation GIS of Blk (Cutblock) EW25 by Cuthbert Ecological Services on April 7, 2026 confirmed the entire Blk ranked as either At-Risk Red or At-Risk Blue Listed primary forest ecosystems clearly establishing Blk EW25 as a prime representative candidate for protection as a documented “old forest” verging on old growth status within the Sechelt Landscape Unit.

In July 2019, the BC government commissioned an independent panel of two foresters, Al Gorley and Garry Merkel, to carry out a review of the status of old forests in the province in order “to inform the development of broad public policy regarding old growth forests. In April 2020, this “old growth panel” submitted their report to government: “A NEW FUTURE FOR OLD
