The scenic Burnett Lake Recreation Site

Dear ELF Supporters,

We have a new campaign to stop the logging of a provincially designated Recreation Site that contains a picturesque lake a mere 15 minute drive from downtown Sechelt. It’s not Trout Lake – it’s the little known Burnett Lake, just northeast of the town. We discovered that Sunshine Coast Community Forest (SCCF) has three cutblocks planned surrounding the lake that would impact the existing hydrology, forest ecology and its high recreational values. Please see our easy TAKE ACTION at the bottom of the page and consider joining us for the upcoming hike on October 27, described below.

The Burnett Lake Recreation Site is within the shishalh Nation’s swiya (lands) and shows evidence of past usage in the numerous culturally-modified trees (CMT), old redcedar trees that historically have had bark striped for a wide variety of uses such as clothing, baskets, and rope.

The cutblocks in AN12A are part of SCCF’s 5-year plan which you may know little or nothing about given the secretive way SCCF releases information. What we uncovered is of interest to all those who enjoy recreational time in nature and are looking for more opportunities in this region. Sometime in the 1990’s under a Provincial Ministry of Forest planning process, a dozen areas on the Sunshine Coast that met the criteria for high recreational values were designated as Recreational Sites, with the Burnett Lake area making the list.

But this is where things get complicated, because when the District of Sechelt obtained a logging license and formed the SCCF, they were given an operating area which included the Burnett Lake Recreation Site. SCCF’s timber cruisers eventually found that the forests surrounding the lake had decent timber volumes and subsequently surveyed AN12A for logging, but failed to share the full story of its ongoing status as a Recreation Site.

ELF has written a detailed report that can be found at this link should you be interested in delving deeper into the issue.

Come hike it with us!
This is a must see area, so we’re organizing a first ever public hike that will take you to the lake, a viewpoint over Burnett Creek and into the surrounding forest that makes up this Recreation Site.

Meet Sunday October 27 at 10:30 a.m. Park and gather near Starbucks coffee shop in Tsain-Ko Shopping Mall, Sechelt. We’ll carpool from there. Round trip – 3 hrs. Moderate rating. No dogs please.

Help protect it – take action!
We’re asking that you get involved by sending SCCF’s Board of Directors a customizable email by clicking on the TAKE ACTION button below, copying and pasting the text into an email and sending it to info1@sccf.ca
